MoCo Arts Dance program offers a variety of classes for students in grades 2 and up (if your student is in grade 1 or younger, please refer to our Young Arts program).

Dance is for everybody and MoCo Arts offers the grace and athleticism of Ballet, the fun of Hip Hop based in the current street styles, the showmanship of Broadway and current styles of Jazz, the free and expressive style of Modern, and the high energy of Tap. All programs participate in professional quality performances, but no dance student is required to perform.

All dance classes require placement based on the student's experience and the evaluation of MoCo Dance Teachers.

Ballet

MoCo Arts offers a ballet program based on the Russian Syllabus. This program offers solid technical training for those who are serious about studying this demanding discipline, as well as for those who wish to take ballet class for strength, endurance and to support other dance forms. Ballet is a demanding physical discipline, and it must be understood that a student can take several years to complete one level of study. Those taking two or more classes per week will advance at a faster rate, and this is highly encouraged. Ballet offers multiple levels of classes based on the skill level of the student.

Students begin in Ballet Intro and move through the levels based on teacher placement.

  • Ballet B Boys – A class for male dancers to focus on specific technique.

  • Ballet D Rep & Ballet E Rep – Repertory classes give students the opportunity to learn choreography with a focus on performance. Permission required.
Pointe

Students begin in Pointe A and move through the levels based on teacher placement.

  • Ballet Pointe A – Ballet Point A is the introductory level to pointe. These classes focus on training the students in correct form. It also focuses on strengthening the dancer’s feet and legs to prepare for further pointe work.

Tap

Tap classes are based on broadway and current style. Students learn the basic steps, focusing on rhythm, formation, and musicality. These classes are high-energy. Tap offers multiple levels of classes based on the skill level of the student.

Students begin in Tap A and move through the levels based on teacher placement.

Jazz

Classes are based on broadway and current jazz styles. This style focuses on technique, rhythm, and showmanship. Jazz offers multiple levels of classes based on the skill level of the student.

Hip Hop

Hip Hop JR. is an introductory class for grades 2 through age 13. These classes teach the students rhythm, style, formations, and self-confidence. All music and dances are age-appropriate. Hip Hop JR. offers multiple levels of classes based on the skill level of the student.

Hip Hop classes, for ages 13 and up, are based on the current street styles of dance. All classes are high energy and are focused on the latest choreography seen in many popular films, videos, and television shows. All music and dances are age-appropriate. Hip Hop offers multiple levels of classes based on the skill level of the student.

Students begin in Hip Hop A and move through the levels based on teacher placement.

Dress Code

Dress code and hair is of the utmost importance for dance classes. It shows a respect to the art form, teacher, fellow students, and yourself. The dress code will allow our instructors to see your alignment better and will allow you to move in class without restrictions.

Ballet:
Female identifying – leotard, pink tights, pink ballet slippers, ballet skirt optional. Hair must be in a bun. If you have bangs (not suggested), they need to be short and not down in your eyes.
Male identifying – black tights, t-shirt, and black ballet shoes. Fitted shorts, ballet skirt, ballet sweater, might be allowed by instructor. Hair needs to be back and out fo your face.

Jazz: 
Leotard or fitted shirt, black fitted leggings or fitted athletic shorts or fitted sweatpants, black jazz shoes is a must.
Female identifying – hair must be firmly secured away from the face. If you have bangs (not suggested), they need to be short and not down in your eyes. Hair must be in a ponytail if not in a bun or up.
Male identifying – hair needs to be back and out of your face.

Tap:
Leotard or comfortable shirt, black fitted leggings or fitted athletic shorts or fitted sweatpants, black tap shoes.
Female identifying – hair must be firmly secured away from the face. If you have bangs (not suggested), they need to be short and not down in your eyes. Hair must be in a ponytail if not in a bun or up.
Male identifying – hair needs to be back and out of your face.

Hip Hop:
Fitted workout clothes, black leggings or fitted sweatpants, black dance sneakers (need for shows), or sneakers you have not worn on the streets. Shoes worn on the street will not be allowed in the studio as it will destroy the dance floors.
Female identifying – hair must be firmly secured away from the face. It may be in a bun, ponytail, or half up-half down. If you have bangs (not suggested), they need to be short and not down in your eyes.
Male identifying – hair needs to be back and out fo your face.

Modern:
Leotard or fitted shirt, fitted black leggings or fitted sweatpants or fitted athletic shorts (if you wear shorts you must have sweatpants in your bag for floor work), bare feet.
Female identifying – hair must be firmly secured away from the face. It may be in a bun, ponytail, or half up-half down. If you have bangs (not suggested), they need to be short and not down in your eyes.
Male identifying – hair needs to be back and out of your face.

Adults:
Dress code is more flexible but still recommended and proper shoes are required.

These items are NOT ALLOWED in the studios:

  • NO jewelry (necklaces, bracelets, etc.)
  • NO dangling or hoop earrings; non-dangling stud earrings or nose rings are allowed.
  • NO watches or smart watches (Apple Watches, etc.)
  • NO street clothes (jeans, sweatshirts, baggy shorts, pajama bottoms, t-shirts, hats, sunglasses, etc.)
  • NO gum chewing, street shoes, food, or drinks (except water).

If you have tattoos, they must be covered in all performances.

Studio and Building Etiquette

How we conduct ourselves shows a respect to the art form, teacher, fellow students, and yourself. Building etiquette also helps us to remain safe. 

Enter class prepared and ready to start (warm your body up). Please arrive to class early and go to the bathroom before class starts. 

If late for class, wait outside until you hear the music stop. Once the music stops, enter the studio and wait for the teacher to ask you to join the class. 

NO cell phone use during class. Cell phones must remain in your bag and can only be used once class is over and before your next class starts. Teachers will allow you to use your phone to record choreography when preparing for performances (ask permission).

NO cell phones allowed out in the dressing rooms.

NO chewing gum or eating in class.

NO drinks allowed in the studio except for water. 

DO NOT open or play with the blinds in the windows or doors in class.

DO NOT hang on the ballet barres or put your feet on the walls. 

DO NOT play on the staircases or in the bathrooms. 

DO NOT run or scream while in the building. 

DO NOT block the hallways or doors in the building.

Tickets

All tickets go on sale to the general public five weeks before the performance.

A presale is offered to the performer’s parents, for shows held in MoCo’s facility, one week before tickets go on sale to the public, to ensure each family secures a seat to their child’s show.

Tickets to performances held in MoCo’s black box, The Founder’s Theatre, can be purchased online, calling MoCo Arts at (603) 357-2100 or visiting MoCo Arts at 40 Roxbury Street, Keene, NH 03431.

Livestream tickets to MoCo performances in The Founder’s Theatre can be purchased through MoCo’s Eventbrite page.

Tickets to performances held at the Redfern Arts Center at Keene State College can be purchased by visiting their website, calling (603) 358-2168, or stopping by the Redfern Arts Center box office at 90 Wyman Way, Keene, NH 03431. Tickets for the Redfern Arts Center are exclusively available for purchase by credit card.
